We had a small discussion about why we think the author put the quote in the book. I think that the author put this quote at the beginning of the book because it is how Ivan is going to live. Ivan didn't want his life to be the way it is. He didn't ask to be caged and a part of some cheap circus act. He wanted a family to protect but he had never been given that chance to be a real gorilla. I think that after the baby elephant arrives he will escape with her to go to the wild.
